SSA just sent me an email, wants me to create a new log-in link to access a recent document download. Involves handing over my cellphone—virtually—for them to take a picture of my passport and then verify my phone number here in Mexico. That sounds like making myself way too visible to the wrong kind of people. Didn’t DOGE already steal into my SSA account?

We don’t trust them, do we? At all! And it’s a hassle; I couldn’t get my passport to lie flat and conform to the hot lines on my phone. As a bonus, though, and you can try this at home: take a look on your phone camera’s screen at your passport and, as you tilt it back and forth, you can see a stream of multi-colored holographic images—stars and such—dancing across its face. Very cool…But I thought better of the engaging in their project.
